Kriky (I did answer but it has 'gone into the ether" I don't recall exactly but used NIK and then played with sliders; added umbrellas from Italy and changed some colours. The second on was pure NIK

Cropped a bit Tweaked the contrast and brightness Clipped the sky and dropped a new stormy sky in Cloned out the people Did a bit of burning in around the hills in the background Dropped a new bit of beach and wave into the foreground Adjusted the foreground colour to reflect more of the sunset colour Put the elephant onto the, now, sandbank break Twiddled around with the wave breaking around the elephant Put grain into the picture to hide dodgy photoshop work!!

Appreciate the explanations. I am seriously not good at editing. Usually do the recommended edit, but this MAKES me want to understand it better. What software do most use? I use Photoshop and I think that's my problem, it's probably too complicated for me. Every time I need to do something, I need to google how to do it.

Sounds just like me Vally. Always forgetting, then going back to try and learn, and not using all the stuff like Stimpy. I have Photoshop CS4, very complicated, and I should keep trying with it.

I use LightRoom for downloading and filing, and a little bit of basic tweaking. It is very good as it does not alter the original image. Then I transfer the files to either Nik or Photoshop Elements 12. It is not as complicated as PS4 but I am not heavily into graphic design and I find PS Elements has all that I need to do an edit. I have had a look at PS4 but I too find it too complicated. Elements is just that. The basic elements of Photoshop. After I have finished I transfer the photos To PS Elements 12 to resize, save for the web so I can post them here.
In a nutshell; LightRoom 5 Nik Collection filters PS Elements 12
Vally, what I did when I first started out was to just play with each of the settings and see what they do. IF YOU ARE USING PS4 MAKE SURE YOU SAVE IT UNDER A NEW FILE NAME before you start editing or , if you forget, after editing select Save As as PS alters the original image and it is permanent. LR will automatically start an edit copy so the original is preserved.
I only use a few basic tools. In the Select Menu I use the Move arrow, The Marquee tool (dotter outlined rectangle) and the Magic Wand (star on a stick). In Enhance Menu is use the red eye tool, the healing brushes ( Bandaid) and the stamp. In the Draw menu I use the Paint Brush, the Eraser, the paint pot, the eye dropper and the pencil. In Modify Menu it is just the Crop tool and the Spirit Level tool In the tool bar at the top I use the File, Edit, Image, and Enhance drop down menus and the Layers Menu but only the basic settings. I also use Photomerge a bit to make Panoramas
I think most people are better off with Elements rather than the full version of PS. If you do have PS then you can do a lot with the few basic tools I mentioned. BTW, I wasn't meaning to be aloof by putting the description of each tool in brackets. In reality I call them the Bandaid Tool or the Star on a Stick. I actually had to look them up to find their correct names. Editing is a lot of fun and sometimes it can save that dodgy photo. My Alpine Lake photo is a good example from last month. The original was bland but the filter made is spark. I also got dust on my sensor which left spots on the image. Instead of them being trashed I used the Bandaid tool to just get rid of the spots. Long winded but I hope it helps.

Self taught Photoshop now using CC cloud version. Basic edits are best done in EFEX pro. If you want to try more adding and subtracting check out the how to videos on the net - utube and adobe using LAYERS. Give yourself time to practice each one a couple of times (I try to take dot point notes to help my poor old brain remember). If you are still struggling give me a yell and Ill do a couple of simple adds and deletions with in depth steps to get you going (I did teach this a bit before in my other life)

Col, I started with Elements. Do I have to buy it?

I think Elements is just a cut down version of PS so all the tools I mentioned you already have. My suggestion is just to focus on the basic tools I mentioned when you edit. It is a very comprehensive program and I am forever being shown something it can do that I didn't know was possible. ( at workshops etc)

Probably like the Adobe Camera Raw that I have to open before PS does. Just basic choices and sharpening.

Judging Day. It was great to see what could be done to a nasty photo. I liked them all, but the winner is Villida for the postcard. Clever, not over done, but a whole new pic. Nice work. Runner up is mems for her first pic. Special mention to Stimpy for terrific editing.
